Bread and cheese bake

    slices white bread, crusts removed
  • butter or margarine

    grated Cheddar cheese

  • salt and pepper to taste


Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Grease an ovenproof dish with margarine or butter. Butter the bread on both sides and slice two of the slices into fingers. Cube the remaining slices. Line the sides of the dish with the bread fingers. Arrange alternating layers of bread cubes and cheese in the dish, ending with a thick layer of cheese. Beat the milk and eggs together, season generously with salt and pepper and pour on top. Bake until the egg mixture has set, about 40 minutes.
