    strawberries, halved

    large apple, grated

    sugar

    brandy

    topping: chilled butter

    self-raising flour

1. Place the fruit in a saucepan along with the sugar and the brandy. Simmer it gently over a low heat until the juices run from the berries. Remove from the heat and pour into a greased ovenproof dish.

2. Topping Rub the cold butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Add the buttermilk to make a scone-like mixture. Use your hands to roll small balls of dough and scatter them on top of the fruit. Bake in a preheated oven for 30 minutes until golden brown. Serve this fruit cobbler with whipped cream or ice cream.
