African Tzaneen orange and nut dessert

Method

 
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well. Sift bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and cake flour into a separate bowl. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture, a little at a time. Stir in orange peel and nuts and pour into a greased 24 cm cake pan. Bake at 160 ºC for 45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Remove from oven, cool slightly, then pour syrup over and serve with vanilla ice cream, a fruit sorbet or cream. SYRUP: Place all ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low saucepan and cook over low heat until syrupy.
