Solve the Mother's Day gift conundrum with food

05 May 2016

I shouldn’t need to remind you that Mother’s Day is this Sunday. And it will be the first time in many years that I will be spending the day with my mom. She lives quite far away so I’ve never been able to plan something really fun to do with her, and now I’m starting to see how hard it actually is to ensure that her day is super special. Gosh, so much pressure!

I was advised that if you’re looking for Mother’s Day gifts – don’t go generic! Know your target market and stick to something that is personal and that means something. If I had all the money in the world, I would my mom a plane ticket to visit my little brother who lives in the United States. I know she misses him a lot! But since that isn’t realistically going to happen, I need to find something that will work. She’s a big Nigel Slater fan and has been eyeing one of his new cookbooks so that makes it a bit easier in choosing something I know she’ll like.

If your Mom loves food and sweet treats, then why don’t you whip up these 3 Mother’s Day desserts to make in 30 minutes. They’re done in a flash meaning you won’t spend your whole day in the kitchen. Have a look at these other awesome foodie ideas you can have fun with.

Want to take her somewhere special? If you’re in the Western Cape, we’ve rounded up 5 great Mother’s Day events in Cape Town, otherwise have a browse through our restaurant section to find a good spot. Word of warning: reserve your table ahead of time!

Our wine editor, Cathy Marston has written about what she really wants for Mother’s Day (it’s always nice getting some truthful insight!).

If you’re cooking a special lunch at home, why don’t you make her favourite dish – otherwise we’ve got thousands of recipes to give you inspiration!

Whatever it is you decide to do (or buy), the only thing you should really be concerned about is that she feels appreciated.

Moms – you are the best! Thank you for always having our backs. We hope your day on Sunday is special!
