Once home of fiercely proud warriors who kept the mighty Romans at bay, the coastal province is blessed with enough lush grasslands for their famous Friesland cows, to provide milk for the massive dairy industry, that’s home to the Friesche Vlag products that are found throughout Holland.

Nagelkaas (cheese seasoned with cloves or caraway seed or both) is typical, as are Friese kruidkoek (Frisian ginger cake), oranjekoek (orange cake, Fryske dúmkes (Frisian thumbs) and sûkerbôle (sugar bread).
