A family tradition
For the past 300 years Kloovenburg has harnessed the rich agricultural potential of the Swartland’s soil. Yet it wasn’t until its purchase some fifty years ago by the du Toit family that the name Kloovenburg became synonymous with quality. Today, under the leadership of formidable husband-and-wife team Pieter and Annalene du Toit, Kloovenburg stands proud as a top-end wine producer and olive grower of international acclaim.
The estate boasts a newly renovated 200-ton cellar and spans 300 hectares along the lower contours of the Kasteel Mountain, of which 130 hectares are devoted to wine grape production. Kloovenburg offers their flagship Shiraz as well as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – all of which have won top awards.
Kloovenburg's serene groves of grey-green olive trees, covering 30 hectares, produce many tons of fruit per season. The idea of planting olive trees was conceived by Pieter's father, who believed that diversification was important in order to keep the farm busy when the grape season was over. The residents 'olive farmer', Pieter's wife Annalene, has turned this harvest into a thriving industry with an ever-expending, innovative range and has recently seen Kloovenburg recognised as one of the world’s top 15 producers of extra virgin olive oil.
Annalene, who started selling a range of bottled olives from the farm house, has since made a name for herself with the quality of her constantly evolving range that includes olive oil, bottled olives, tapenade and several other fascinating olive-related products such as beauty products.
* Food24 sampled the Kloovenburg Olive Chutney and can highly recommend it to all our readers. It's a lovely versatile product that can easily be used to accompany snacks (we found it worked really well with mature cheese) or as a condiment with hot curries. The Extra Virgin Olive oil also deserves all its accolades. Kloovenburg products are available from the Kloovenburg cellar and select retail outlets countrywide including Cape Town's Fleur Deli, Andiamo's and the Olive Tree in Stellenbosch as well as the Tapenade Olive Shop in Gauteng. Designated Spar outlets in Gauteng and the Western Cape also stock the oils
