UK supermarket chain Tesco's "beef" burgers contain horse meat.

United Kingdom - After tests were undertaken at 4 branches of Tesco, a giant UK supermarket chain, scientists revealed that some of the ‘beef burgers’ actually contained horse meat.

The report was made after a check that was done by a group of Irish food safety experts.

According to the Daily Mail, Tesco issued an apology and had some of the burgers withdrawn.

Tim Smith, Tesco's technical director said, 'We immediately withdrew from sale all products from the supplier in question.’

Meanwhile, Professor Alan Reilly, chief executive of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, said there was no good explanation for the inclusion of horse meat in the burgers. Is there ever a good explanation?

Horse meat is eaten in many parts of the world but to sell it by stating “beef” on the label is seriously shady. Tesco, what were you thinking?
