Red onions
Red onions are a late-maturing variety with flattish bulbs in an attractive red colour. They require full sun and should be sown in late spring in a rich, drained soil. Once picked, they should be stored in a cool, dark environment. The health benefits of red onions include lowering cholestrol, redusing the risk of certain cancers and assisting in blood coagulation. Red onions have a distinctive, pungent flavour slightly more delicate than white onions.

Use: They're ideal for use in soups or stews and can be boiled, baked or steamed. They're also popular in salads and on hamburgers.
