The Banana Split, America's classic dessert, became popular in the 1920s. Its first appearance was apparantly in Pennsylvania in 1904 and consisted of a banana split in half, lengthwise, two or three scoops of ice cream, a generous serving of chocolate sauce and strawberry sauce, and the traditional maraschino cherry on the top. If you want to add a bit of character to the dessert favourite, caramelise the bananas. You can do this by brushing sliced fruit with melted butter, sprinkling with brown sugar and cooking in a non-stick pan until golden brown. Then top with scoops of ice cream and toasted almonds. Yummy..
