Chandani's Reviews

1 Why are the portions so small and the food tepid?

2 I have to agree with Vicky about the quality of the food at Chandani. My husband expected some good hot curry, and even though we have to agree that good curry does not always mean hot, he specifically ordered his dish as hot as possible. It was insipid, and he sent it back. It came back two minutes later, a bit more spicy, and we speculated that they only stirred in some chilli. We were a party of ten. We all received lovely silver bowls of sauce where the five pieces of meat each (we counted) did not break the surface of the sauce. It follows that the rest of us who ordered something milder hardly tasted any curry. The naan was divine, the ambience great and the decor authentic, but they do not serve good curry. 3 Excellent food, great ambiance and good prices too. Service a bit slow. Will be back asap.

4 Lovely decor. Good food. Well-priced. Service is average. Was fully booked the night we went, so could excuse average service, but it is an area they can work on.

5 Ambiance and service wise, this exceeded expectations. The food was second rate, not delicious like at restaturants Bakara and Birhari. I had lamb rogan josh. The curry was thin in taste and texture, lamb tasted as if it had been cooked separately then added to a watered down paste-like sauce which was not authentic. We didn't eat it and the manager did not exercise the courtesy to take it off the bill. The lamb with spinach curry was much better, but again the lamb had been added later and hadn't absorbed the spices. The curries at Birhari and Bakara are certainly far superior. Pity because Chandani's decor is a treat with rose pettals strewn all over the table and entrance and it is close to home and I love great curry. Food-wise though, it is a disappointment; perhaps just a bad night? Guys, if you put as much effort into your food as you have your ambiance and you will have a winner.

6 Really great place, I'll go back again and again... Possibly the best Indian food in South Africa that I have tasted so far.

7 The best Indian food in Cape Town. This small restaurant in the heart of Woodstock has only been open for a few months, but already it is booked out every night of the week. Authentic Indian decor wasn't the only thing the owners brought back from India - they brought 2 Indian Chefs as well.
The food is simply sublime, with many options for each of the categories (chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian). Most of the dishes are prepared as they are ordered, so expect a slightly longer wait for your book; but the wait is definitely worth it. Also, they are not yet fully licensed, so bring along your own wine. In summary, the setting is intimate, the service is good and the food is unforgettable.
