My partner and I went to the Five Flies for a special occasion. Neither of us had been there before, and after all the good reviews from friends we decided we had to see for ourselves. The interior is amazing and the evening seemed to be off to a perfect start. We had oysters, which, quite frankly, was below standard. The wine prices are exorbitant (but still less than a lot of restaurants charge, which just goes to show you). Anyway, we ordered our mains and by this time our initially eager waiter seemed to have forgotten about us and moved on to a bigger table. The food was good (mine was a bit cold), but for the price you pay you expect more than 'good'; you want extraordinary. It was a great evening because the company was good, but all in all I have to admit that paying that much for a meal that I could probably have made myself leaves a rather bad taste in the mouth. Was at Five Flies on Sunday 9 March 2008.
What a Place, the ambience is fantastic, the food delicious, the service impeccable and the value for money fantastic. Keep up the good work guys, will definately drop by next time we're in Cape Town

We had a fabulous time at Five Flies. Food was great and our waitron really attentive and helpful but not over-bearing. My only complaint is that we were seated in a smoking area when I specifically requested a non-smoking area when I made our reservation. Other than that, we have no other complaints. The food really is suberb and Five Flies is a great restaurant - not the cheapest but the quality of the meal justifies the prices.

After all the hype surrounding a visit to Cape Town's much celebrated Five Flies, I was very much looking forward to this particular dinner.
On arrival we waited in the echoing vestibule to be seated by a supercilious host.
Once we were seated, our waitress explain in great and confusing detail every single thing on the menu, instead of focussing on dishes that were especially good, to help us narrow our choice.
The wine list was good, but extravagantly priced, while the food was nothing particularly special.
Having heard for years that this was the place to go, I was rather embarrassed to take my friends there, as it turned out to be rather a let down. It seems that perhaps the hype of its early years has devoloved into something less than it once was.
In short, I was disappointed.

I am very impressed with Five Flies as the first I've been introduced I was taken away that in that corner of cape town you could have such a great atmosphere as for the food I was introduced to nouvelle cuisine there and very impressive it was. Being a muslim it's always difficult to get all three courses and be able to eat it. We have friends that comes and visit every year and it is now a ritual to have our first night out for supper at Five Flies to set the week.
Great restaurant and atmosphere. Awesome keep it going .

I've been a Five Flies fan for years now. Whenever friends are comming to visit (and even overseas guests or work related lunches) - I recogment the Flie! Last night I've send my big boss with visitors from UK to the Flie for the first time and I wasn't at all worried, because I know that the standard of Five Flies will always be the best. Keep it up!

If you've ever seen the movie "Mostly Martha" or "Like Water for Chocolate" and remember the tastes, flavours and passion for cooking, then Five Flies is for you! I'd heard about Five Flies, but had never had the opportunity to go.That is, until recently when my dearest friend, Karen, decided to celebrate her birthday there. (Note: Karen = friend with obvious good taste!) I went with no expecations and left with a Five Flies Love Sonnet in my heart. Right from the Prawn starter, to the Beef Fillet main to the poached Pear, with Chocolate mousse and Meringue dessert it felt like time had come to a grinding halt. The portions were perfect. For obvious reasons, I'm a little bit blurry on the actual conversation that night... but make sure YOU don't miss out on the Five Flies experience!

I took my girlfriend to Five Flies for her Birthday. We were treated really well - was seated in the cellar which is very romantic. Great food with lots of good wine to choose from. Totally awesome service and at the end we enjoyed the Kalua Coffee and Cigars upstairs at the bar. Highly recommended!!!

Had seductive starters but main meals were disappointing at R95. Sole and mash! Ostrich fillet and mash! lamb and mash! Can chefs not be more creative than mash especially at the price they charge for main meals?
