Beluga's Reviews

1 Great ambience, excellent food and spectacular view, Fascinating wine list!

2 Every time I've gone to Beluga the sushi has been melt in the mouth, I love it! But the service is usually quite slow, it takes a long time for someone to serve us or to get a drink but besides the service the atmosphere and food are really great :)

3 This is one of the best sushi establishments in Cape Town. A R99 platter will provide you with an excellent array of sushi which brings me back very regularly at this fine restaurant. The service and quality of food is excellent!

5 My husband took me to Beluga for our 2nd wedding anniversary last night, and wow! We had such a great evening! We were treated to the best table in the house, upstairs in the window overlooking the entire restaurant. Service was fantastic and the food was awesome. Their great 26 piece sushi special is still going strong. We ordered it to share for a starter; it arrived in less than 20mins and was fresh and delicious. Our mains did not disappoint, my hubby's fillet and my lamb rack was cooked flawlessly and utterly enjoyable. We were treated to a beautifully presented Belgium chocolate dessert, which I'm glad we shared because it was so decadently sweet. A special thank you to our waiter John, who was attentive without being over bearing, and manager, Genni who went out of her way to make our evening very special.

6 Really good food, I go there 3 times a week, work right next door at 24.com. Pity that her experience was so different from mine.

7 Dear Tarryn. Please allow me to apologise for the poor service you received. I will speak to my hostess team - we are really trying. Just a bit about me. I started my career as a waiter and worked myself up, saving and working 90 hour weeks - I really don't think that I am high and mighty (and trust me, neither do any of my staff). I actually think that we are good people, working hard to try and make a living. The one thing I will say about my staff is that we really try and accommodate everyone. Can I ask you to ask for me (or any of the 8 managers on shift) next time (if their is a next time) you feel anyone is treating you with less respect than you think you deserve. I and my partner Craig is in the restaurant at most times and we are always available for any and all guests. Further, on the menu you will find Craig and my email address added so we are really not hiding away. And lastly, if you don't like the restaurant, sushi and food then I suggest you find another venue.

8 I have found myself wondering what the big deal is about Beluga. The food isn't great and the sushi is pretty average and small in size. On a good note, the cocktails is great...if u manage to get them! Cos man is the service beyond terrible at this place! on 2 occasions, I have pre-booked a table and I arrived to find the order was "lost" and got such terrible attitude from the staff about it. What is with THREE ppl at the doorway? Cos all they do is mill around without helping! and the rest of the staff either think they are too high-and-mighty or are sulking for some strange reason! what a pity - it has such potential!

9 Hi Carly. Firstly thank you so much fro coming to beluga and with your feedback. I apologise for your horrible burger. We are reviewing our burger designs and will soon be launching a whole new gourmet burger menu. Please pop around again and ask for me, I'm sure the burger will be much better, thats a guarantee. Thanks
Chef : February 01, 2008
10 Dear Carly,
I am so sorry to hear about your horrible burger. I would have sent it back especially after the comment from the waitress, it's certainly doesn't sound appetising at all. At the moment we are going through a change in our kitchen staff. So we are busy training and trying to eradicate all the problems and tardiness from the older staff. Please accept our apologies and pop around again. Ask for me by name and I'll come round to the table and be sure to make you something that will give you new belief in Beluga. Look forward to meeting you, kind regards Yngve

11 While I always stick to sushi at Beluga I made the mistake to try their Coriander Burger for lunch last week. Expecting a delicious burger with an interesting tasty coriander sauce or paste I was terrible disappointed when my burger arrived with a burger basting sauce with a couple of green flakes and fried onions, and a very sad twig of coriander. I think the waitress summed it up when she was serving our different orders: "Oh yes you're one is the one with the green bits." Disappointing for R50 sure the chef can come up with something a bit better considering the standard of the rest of the menu.

12 Beluga in Green Point, Cape Town offers rump steaks matured for 60 days. An absolute taste and tenderness heaven. This is the CT restaurant to die for - with sushi to match.

13 Fantastic sushi - they have half price sushi running everyday until 7pm and they still make it fresh to order! So it doesn't sit around & doesn't become sticky like other places with specials. Their portions are generous & their salmon roses and sashimi is the best I've ever had - hands down

14 We decided to try Beluga's 1/2 price sushi special yesterday. I wondered if they would compromise the portions at all, and they didn't. We spent R100 and each had quite a lot to eat. Sushi was fresh and really tasty. A definite must!! Pop in at Beluga (one of Cape Town's absolute best restaurants) and indulge yourselves!

15 Sushi is the best and the price is most reasonable. I'm so loving Beluga's. Try it and see for yourself , you won't regret it.

19 I was at Beluga on Saturday and the food was absolutely fabulous. We were 6 patrons whom ordered a variety of dishes such as the grilled tuna with olive oil, lamb chops, sushi and smoked salmon and all of the meals were tender, juicy and mouthwatering. Thank you for the good service as well.

20 I eat sushi at least once a week at Beluga in Green Point and it truly is DEVINE. Service, could be a bit faster, but when you paying only half price for sushi and Cocktails I guess they assume you dont need the BEST service. Over all a great experience, hope the half price special stays on longer!!!

21 I found myself wondering once more why I keep on going to Beluga. The food isn't bad, the cocktails is grand and sushi special doesn't hurt, but ohhh is the service beyond terrible at this place. And it seems to fluctuate from being fantastic to downright old-age-home pedestrian! Scenario: Half empty outside area, four waiters, two floor managers and three hostesses forming a posse of uselessness. It's as if someone else thinks that someone else is doing or getting the order, leaving the customer waiting for someone else! Waiting 25 min for four draught beers is unacceptable especially when the restaurant isn't packed, running out of your only draught beer at 5 pm on a hot summer's day in Cape Town just doesn't make ANY business sense! Let's not get into the Passion Fruit Martini that the waiter turned into a Pina Collada, that we cancelled because no one ordered a Pina Collada.... eventually wondering after 40 min what happened to said Passion Fruit Martini. Placating disgruntled patrons with free drinks... a great idea but come one get the service to match the food and location.

22 We arrived a Beluga, where we were seated at a very exclusive spot upstairs, and prepared to tuck into sushi, one of Beluga's specialties. Although reasonably priced by Cape Town's standards, Beluga also offers great specials from 5-7pm every day. Or evening, if you really want to be pedantic about it. The restaurant has a great ambience, no overtly loud background music to speak of, but not uncomfortably quiet either. You can talk about your erection problems or your recent bout of halitosis without fear of anyone hearing you. The food was to my rather high standard, the sushi was fresh, tight and compact, and the service by our deaf waiter was quite superb (he hovered around every 5 minutes or so without being overly annoying) Overall a good dining experience. Shaun recommends.

23 I recently was told that Beluga would be having a special on sushi and other Asian food till the end of October. Wanting to take advantage of this, i went for dinner on Sunday. I ordered spring rolls to start and a 22 piece sushi platter. The spring rolls, looked as if they had been cut in half and the pieces of sahimi and california rolls were unbelievably small!! Why halve the price if you are going to halve the size of the meall. This is a real con!!

24 You can't fault Beluga on their sushi. In fact, you can't fault Beluga on just about any item on the menu. The food is great. The vibe is great. And the specials are, well, specially attractive. The current half-price offer on sushi and cocktails (on until the end of October) makes for a feast that no sushi fan dare miss! Last night we had to sit outside (didn't book) but there were gas heaters and we were offered blankets to keep us warm. Service was good and the hosts were attentive. Our only problem was getting the waiter to cut the 14 cocktails on our bill down to the five the three of us actually ordered and drank! It took three efforts, much frustration and more patience than I care to have for such a simple task, to get it right.

Why go to Beluga for a birthday celebration?
The Answer: Don't, not only do you have to wave your arms around to get some service, when you finally do, you have to wait 30 mins for a cocktail.

Then when you are eventually seated at the waiters station having specifically asked to be as far away as possible when you have made the booking that week.

At the table the service was no better. Slow Slow Slow.

Starter orders were eventually taken and the food took a long time to make an appearance but was tasty when it eventually arrived.
Main coarse I ordered a steak medium Rare (more rare) and the steak came well done.. It was sent back and luckily I was second time lucky.

The food was okay but service is terrible.
Very disapointed.

26 Hi Chef, Thank you for your response, Beluga staff is (and have always been) very professional and very quick to fix any problems should they arise. (except our waiter on our last visit)You guys are doing a great job considering the number of covers you do related to the style of food. The problems (except the parfait) could easily have been solved if our waiter just came round to check if everyhing was ok after serving our main course. Our JHB friends were blown away by the experience.

28 Dear Stephan Sorry to hear about your experience,it was most certainly not up to the high standards that we are renowned for.Oscar has brought me on board, along with two fantastic chefs, who will be presented at a later date to enhance the dining experience of Beluga and take our fantastic restaurant to another level. I was saddened by your review, as the Beluga team strive at all times to present a memorable dining experience. On your next visit to Beluga, ask your waitron to inform me and I will personally make a few dishes (not on the menu), just for you! The wine glasses! We serve wine in a "one for all" glass. It's an elegant glass that allows a superior taste for both white and red.Your waitron should have informed you of this.
Chef : August 25, 2007
29 A very very average experience. Firstly our waiter treated us like friends rather than customers. Secondly, after ordering a R200 bottle of red wine being told that they didn't have any red wine glasses. Our starter, the duck liver parfait was clearly over-cooked and grainy in texture. The main courses were good but the side veg ordered were only room temperatue and had not been heated at all. One guest at our table also ordered sushi and about two minutes before the main course arrived she was told that they could not do her Maki rolls and she had to choose a replacement. To be fair to Beluga, we only arrived at 10pm but were told that the kitchen was open until 11pm, so it wasn't really a valid excuse since we had finished eating by then already...

30 The sushi was flavoursome and fresh, with fast friendly service and wonderful location. And it's half price!
