Reuben's's Reviews

Went for Sunday lunch. While the food was good (not great, as we are led to believe by all the hype), the service was desperately bad. This in spite of the restaurant being only quarter full.

Excellent food. However, our booking was mislaid and our waitress made two mistakes with our order. Management please take note. This sort of thing can spoil an excellent experience.

What a disappointment! We recently visited this famous Franschhoek restaurant on a Friday evening. We could only get a booking at 8h30, and were scarcely seated, when the waiter and later manager tried to bulldoze us into ordering food. Our habit is never to rush into orders, but enjoy a glass of wine first and savour the ambience and decor of any restaurant we visit. To my amazement and annoyance, we were then bluntly told that their last food orders had to be in by 9h00! I could not believe and still do not understand that an establishment of this fame and calibre could close their kitchen at 9h00 on a Friday evening. The rest was also disappointing. The service was not bad, but not great either. Same for the food. The portions were small (especially considering the prices, which are a rip-off for what you get) and the dishes rather bland and uninspiring. Reuben's seems to be just cruising along on its established reputation, but that the flair and creativity is gone.

We've been meaning to go to Reuben's for sometime and finally made it on an atrocious Tuesday night. Mixed feelings about it to be honest. In general I would say that I just ordered badly that night - everything my husband ordered looked and tasted better than mine but even with that in mind, my starter was poor to say the least. Tasted like it was bought-in deep-fried bread crumbed goujons of hake (meant to be monkfish) and prawns - huge thick layer of breadcrumbs, unimaginative, bland and tasteless and R75!! But the atmosphere was great, the service was excellent and the whole evening was very pleasant. I would like to think I got them on an off-day and would very much like to try them again as I have heard more good reports than bad but it was a fairly disappointing intro I must say.
