FAST GROWING: SLOW FOOD

Whether breakfast, lunch or supper, it's important to preserve your culture and hold on to the true enjoyment of food. Or so say the Slow Food Movement...

What is the Slow Food Movement?

The Slow Food Movement strives to protect and promote traditional food preparation styles that are indigenous to a country. Their aim is to revive conviviality and the communal dinner table where the family communicates and enjoys a wholesome and traditional meal with each other.

How was the movement started?

The movement was started in 1986 in Italy by Carlo Petrini, an Italian journalist. He was - and is still - passionate about Italian heritage food and was spurred on when he saw the famed twin golden arches of a popular fast food chain going up in the heart of Rome, the Piazza di Spagna.

What is the movement's aim?

They aim to prevent the homogenisation and globalisation of food production in all forms. They want to popularise slow food as opposed to fast food.

How big are they?

The Slow Food Movement has branches in 45 countries worldwide and boasts over 60 000 members.

Is there one in South Africa?

There are two branches in South Africa presently, in Gauteng and Cape Town. These branches organise monthly meetings and gatherings. They have wine tastings and enjoy scrumptious and traditional meals at historic venues around the country. They have their foot in many fund-raising projects and try to support food and nutrition programmes.

The movement wants to preserve old varieties of fruit and vegetable products and dishes that are in danger of extinction because of globalisation and standardisation. These programmes have proven to be very successful in Italy and in Europe. One of their success stories was the preservation of the alpine goat's cheese. The goats needed for this cheese were in danger of becoming extinct, the Slow Food movement donated money and helped them to continue.
