    44 King Street: In a happening area, down a cobbled street. The best caesar salad and a glass of Champagne in town, fantastic winelist and modern Australian food. Good for a lunch or pre-theatre supper too. Their bread is so popular they also bake it to go.
    Gino's in Fremantle. Some of the best breakfasts and street-watching in this most lively satellite of Perth. Stylish Italian, brilliant coffee and innovative small things.

    Salt, Darlinghurst. Slick and modern, and a menu that includes such heavenly things as beetroot and horseradish shots- soup in a shot glass and a single soft boiled quail egg rolled in brown sugar and celery salt- totally exquisite
    Kam Fook, Haymarket. A Yum Cha haven- this 800-seater offers an authentic Asian experience and a mind-boggling array of dim sum morsels. Very few Westerners and minimum English are the order of the day. Opt for lunch and go early, this place gets packed.

    Melia Bali, Nusa Dua. Degan Suprijadi has prepared Balinese banquets for the likes of Stephen Spielberg, Mel Gibson and Oliver Stone. A gourmet spin of Indonesian fare which showcases local ingredients from bebek betutu (spicy duck) and snapper wrapped in banana leaf to black rice.
    Menega Restaurant, Melia Benoa, Tanjung Benoa. The freshest catch in the south Pacific in a traditional open-air restaurant on the beach.

  • Berlin

    Diekmann. Historic meeting-place for Berliners in the only house on the platz that survived the bombing of Hitler's bunker and the demolition of the Berlin Wall. A chic, cosmopolitan restaurant with superb market fare, depending on when you visit.
    Kartoffelkeller. At this subterranean cellar, they do the humble spud 101 ways. A very fashionable after-theatre venue, a delightful experience.

    Griensteidl Café Restaurant. A landmark for Austrian cuisine in an elegant coffee-shop overlooks the grand palace platz and Spanish Riding School.
    The Guess Club. Try global cuisine at the trendiest new restaurant that is shaking up the city that is the cradle of the classics.
    Denel. This is still the most mind-blowing Coffee House in the world capital of coffee and colories.
    Griechenbeisl, the oldest tavern in town has medieval atmosphere, cosy cellars, leaded windows and hearty well-priced fare.

  • Switzerland

    Hiltl, Zurich. Established in 1898, this vibing vegetarian restaurant serves a ravishingly delicious buffet, with pavement seating to watch the people and passing parade.
    Hotel Restaurant Rustico in Klosters. Creative cooking with local game dishes and a casual, convivial buzz of international jet-setters with skiing on their minds.
    Make a detour to the eastern tip of Zurich and Josef and Lee Hegner-Bethell's chummy Speiserestaurant Freihof in the little town of Buttikon.

  • London
    Victor Strugo- Eat Out critic

    Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. Experience the perfection of three Michelin stars a London's best price (three-course lunch- 30 pounds). Book a month ahead before leaving home.
    The Ivy specialises in traditional British fare. Book ahead: this Regency style, theatreland venue is booked solid for lunch and dinner. Sunday lunch as a cheaper option.
    Café Fish is a well-priced pre or post theatre venue. The fish is fresh and the service friendly.
    Passione is rich in regional cooking and a great Italian ambience.
    The Mirabelle. The place for discreet celebrity spotting and palate-pleasing modern French cuisine. It's essential to book at least a month in advance. Sunday lunch is a bargain.
