| Dont feel guilty at all |
Enjoy it, I eat very expensively and at only some of the best restaurants, why the hell would I want to feed a child in SA if I worked for my money, I tried once to set something up for charity in SA but you are plagued with red tape and bull$& everybody wants to make money themselves so they can eat like that so why bother? keep my cash and eat like a king and I DON'T feel guilty I work DAMN hard - Richard |
| Lekker! |
I too agree with Denise and Cheryl. They don't owe SA one dime. By the way, your SA fancy dinner, by comparison, is just as expensive. Go to a well known restaurant and you will also get close to R1000. So, what is your point Jenny and Ben? - Only Me |
| Smoke on that |
Hmm - yeah I am sure your 1000 pound meal would go down easy while someone is begging outside the restaurant, or are so poor they can't even afford the garnish on one of your 12 courses... IN BRITAIN! - larry.j |
| Lafitte |
I no people who would pay 14k just for a glass of Chateu Lafitte. Bottles of older vintages frequently fetch over 10 000 pounds. Yhey can keep the caviar though. - G |
| thou shall not waste |
It ain't judging Denise. Its about being reasonable. We tend to think about ourselves before considering the less fortunate. A 1000 pounds meal is ridiculous. Wastage has reppurcusions and by the way , that 1000 pound meal turns into crap and not gold. - hmz |
| Great thing is |
Wonderful there aren't any people in Brittain that can claim to be that destitute and poor, you get a council house and money in your pocket, not promises of it... so i don't feel a tad sorry for the people begging there because they have drunk/drugged out their monthly allowance. - StephanB |
| Sign me up! |
Sounds good to me.
Cuisine in SA is positively boring.. - the glut |
| Whatever!!! |
I agree with hmz - after all that money - its gonna come out as crap.... maybe if people stopped spending money on things that they don't need, then the world would be a better place... Its not about having a victim mentality - its about having equal opportunities and with 1000 Pounds we could feed the aged, homeless or aids orphans for at least 1 week.... - Vanessa |
| Why is this a problem? |
I guess this is just a matter of perspective for the person who earns that much money. On special occasions, or when I'm feeling a little "down", I may buy something that exceeds my average spend. If its a R100 meal, that could potentially feed a number of poor persons. But, where do you draw the line? Should I be eating on a staple food diet?
I am also a charitable person. - ZMo |

| R14000.00 |
Hmm.. If only I could afford to spend like that... I reckon it would be fun - KD |
| Siss |
I find it hard that we have such a selfish mentality. Of course the money you worked so hard for is yours - but remember that is in giving that we receive and it is for us to bless others with whatever it is we can. In this way we will never run out. It's not about the fact that you worked hard for your money and that you can do whatever you want - that's right but it's the fact that to be so extravagant is unnessessary. You'll actually feel much better spending half that money on a meal (that is still pretty fab) and giving the other half to a begger on the street or shelter or other cause. .. that's my opinion anyway. - gino |
| Enjoy it |
Why not spend your money on something you like? We work hard for our money in the UK. I also contribute to charities in SA, but the politicians in SA are only interested in enriching themselves, they don't care about their people. - The golfer |
| Priorities |
Something I have come to realise in life is that we all have different priorities. And incomes. I love luxuries and would love to drive around in a fancy car, but would prefer to help others. Same with eating out, probably would try the restaurant if I could afford to. But my priorities are not to be that extravagent, but if I had enough money probably would. So the rest of you, who like me are envious of those who can afford to dine at a place like that, put on your big girl panties, and deal with it! !-) - Les |
| I have done it before! |
When I worked in the movie industry in the UK, it was not uncommon to sip away on 30 Pound non-alcoholic drinks and 400 Pound platters. Some evening came to around 2000 Pounds per person. 1000 Pounds is nothing! I must admit, we were ripped off, but it was about the fact that we were showing off money we did not have, sad, but true. Even more sad is that if I had saved that money, I could have owned a Ferrari instead of a Porsche. - TheONe |
| expensive meal |
Expensive meals are uplifting. Am I cheap? - Big spender |
| R14000 a meal? |
I really believe that if you can afford to spend R14000 on a meal, you probably earn a great deal more. Enjoy the moment, but at the same time, if you are earning that amount...why not give a little to those less fortunate too?

Given the direction of food prices at spar lately, a steak will soon cost R14 000 alone - Skiet |
| Live like you are dying |
Imagine that you have everything, the house, the car, the jewelry etc, and a pile of money. Why not get the best (you can afford) and most memorable meal? Life is short, whether you are rich or poor.

| 1000 gbp MEAL |
Sour grapes Jenny and Ben. Do something to help yourselves......work hard! - simone |
| Cant take it with you |
You cant take it with you so why not go ahead and do it if you have the cash. Being rich is not a crime and how you spend your loot is up to you. - Rob |
| get some perspective!! |
How can anybody enjoy a R14 000 meal (ONE meal) when there are so many people starving??!! I've read about a hotel in Asia that gives R10 000 caviar body wraps at their spa...if you want to eat or wrap it for R10 000-14 000, you need to get a bit of perspective in your life... - Jo |
| ?1000 meal |
Even if I had the money to spend 1000 pounds on a single meal, I still would not do it- its excessive- what these people do not realise is that some restaurant owner is taking advantage of their customers insatiable pride- to be able to spend that money on a meal makes them feel wealthy and powerful and the owner is feeding their pride and selling it as an exclusive meal! It's laughable actually because they could eat just as well for a 10th of that price and that's a fact! Food can only taste so good. By the way, if you are one of those big spenders, I have an exclusive shoe polishing business which uses ancient techniques long forgotten by mortal men (other than myself) we also use an ancient blend of polish that leaves the shoe and indeed the foot and pride feeling great- only 2500 pounds/ shoe... give me a call. - Kev Dodd |
| Spar prices |
Given the direction of SPAR prices of late, we will be paying R14 000 for the steak alone shortly. - Skiet |
| Why not? |
An experience like that is something unforgettable, we could easily spend R14000 over a period of time on crappy Spur food. Why not have a meal to remember till the Alzheimers sets in. - wendy |
| What! |
Just imagine how far that 1000 pounds can go in SA to feed people. Such extravagance is sickening! - jenny |
| Feeding the poor |
I fully agree with Jenny. R14,000 could feed a lot of hungry children. I hope they choke on their caviar! - Ben Stone |
| Enjoy !!! |
Oh how people can judge others, yes Jenny and Ben. Let them enjoy, after all it is there hard earned cash not yours ..... Why must we always judge others. I wish I could afford to do that !!!!! Denise - Denise |
| 1 000-pound menu! |
Why would these people feel the urge to feed people in SA with their hard earned cash - we should feed ourselves.. their bonus ..their reward. Our entitlement and victim mentality is pathetic. - Cheryl |
| Get over it |
Yes, R14 000 is an excessive amount to spend on a dinner...but what people are forgetting is the fact that it it NOT R14 000, it is 1000 pounds!
If people are willing to spend that amount on a dinner, then they must do so! It is their hard earned cash, and if they want to spoil themselves, then by all means they should. Quite honestly, I think our government should buck itself up, and feed our own people. We cannot rely on other countries on other continents to feed our people for us. Come on, government, get yourself together! - Michelle |
