Fast food – How bad is it?

South Africans love fast food so much that they ignored their expanding waistlines last year and spent a whopping R16.8 billion satisfying cravings for burgers, chips, pizzas and other franchise produced meals.

Typically fast foods are said to only succeed in getting arteries clogged and blood pressures boiling. But a study to uncover the good, the bad and the ugly sides to fast food has found that not all franchise meals should be lumped in the same frying pan.

Franchise giants Spur, KFC, Nando's, McDonald's, Steers, King Pie, Ocean Basket and Wimpy were all part of the study conducted by Reader’s Digest. Meals were rated according to their kilojoules, fat and sodium content.

Experts quoted in the study include Professor Tessa van der Merwe, President of the South African Society for the Study of Obesity.

The study guides the public on which are the worst offenders, which are less offensive and how best to satisfy fast food urges "without sabotaging your health".

South Africans would do well to take the guide seriously given that 45% of are overweight and a staggering one in three South Africans are actually obese – which greatly increases the risk of potentially fatal conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Fattest of the fastest
Spur’s Rib Burger – two 100g pork rib patties accompanied by chips and fried onion rings – was found to be the "fattest of the fastest". The study suggests that Spur fans look for the Heart Foundation's heart mark on the menu to identify healthier choices.

The best Spur choice would be the Slimmer's Steak – which has less than half the kilojoules, less than a quarter of the fat and less than a quarter of the sodium content compared to the Rib Burger.

Burgers
The Big Mac is the worst offender at McDonald's as it contains twice the kilojoules, nearly three times the fat and about twice the sodium as the regular burger.

Chicken
KFC fans should opt for the Regular Rounder, preferably lose the dressing and add some salad, and an orange, apple or pear juice to create "a complete meal".

The flame-grilling at Nando's ensures lower fat ratings, and the best choice is the Chicken Steak versus the Chicken Espetada which has nearly four times the kilojoules, five times the fat and over five times the sodium.

Pies
Pie fans should order the relatively low fat Beef Curry Pie and toss the Ham and Cheese Pie when popping in to King Pie.

Chips
As for chips – these can contain more kilojoules and fat than your basic cheeseburger. So it is best to order a small portion or share with a friend.

Milkshakes
Milkshake fans will cringe at the thought that these can pack as much saturated fat as a bacon and cheese burger. The McDonald's Extra Large Chocolate Shake has 3 552 kilojoules and up to 20,4g of fat. If the temptation proves too high to conquer, then the researchers suggest the milkshake is enjoyed as the meal rather than in addition to a meal.

Sushi
Generally considered a healthy fast food, sushi can contain some devilish secrets. So it is better to order a Salmon Maki Roll which contains about half the fat, sodium and kilojoules when compared to Rainbow Roll with rice wrapped in layers of salmon and avocado.

Cucumber Maki Roll is practically fat free and can be spiced up with a powerful wasabi punch which contains no fat or sodium and just 42 kilojoules.

Pizza
Five pizza chains contacted were unable to provide nutritional analyses of their products so they were not included in the study.

* The R16.8 billion fast food turnover figure was calculated by Franchize Directions which conducted a survey on franchising in South Africa.

Nutritional Info
Thanks for the article, it would be great to have more info on the topic, and maybe even include other franchises, such as Steers, Kauai, Chicken Licken etc. Also please give more info regarding Sushi, what are the nutritional benefits as well as the downfalls, same goes for other fast food outlets. - TEG

MUNCHIES
Some 'food for thought' considering if you wanna loose weight. - Sfiso

Fast Food
Thanks for the informative article. Would be interesting to follow up at some stage on the pizza angle. - Pam

Comparisons?
This is only somewhat useful - are you comparing per 100g, or per meal? And surely even the Rainbow Roll is better than a Big Mac? How about comparing options across the board, rather than per category? - CJ

STATS
It would be great to get the stats for comparing the different foods (i.e burgers) at different outlets with sodium/fat/sugar/etc content. Would be a handy thing to look at the next time we order take aways. - shot

Cheats
I think the fastfood industry is getting away with murder, so to speak. We should have a law, forcing each restaurant / fastfood outlet to show the exact contents & kilojoules next to each menu item, as well as the percentage trans fatty acids. Fastfood is a time bomb and they are cashing in. We need urgent government action! - Wayne

Junk food
There is no such thing as junk food. Everything in moderation. 1 burgher and chips a day won't make you fat. 20 burghers will, but so will 20 sushi rolls! - Eat like you want

RE: Junkfood (Eat like you want)
That's simply NOT true, there is something like junk food, food that's unhealthy and does not provide real nutrition, generally just clogging up your arteries. Consuming only one hamburger and chips each and every day will be like signing your own death certificate, over time. Have you ever watched "Supersize me"? The trans fatty acids contained in one hamburger & chips meal is far off the scale in terms of the daily allowance. Moderation is important, but so is the actual food you consume. - Wayne

junk food
I think we should all just try to look at the bigger picture and have a balanced diet...that includes fast foods...everybody deserves a burger now and then... - Jodean

why if fast food legal
why not stop all the speculation just ban fast food. I know that is an unrealistic thing to do, but by the sounds of it fast food is nearly as damaging as smoking and drinking. we are far to lazy and and have far to many credit cards (to pay for the food) Just a thought - sonya

Junk Food
Wayne is 100% correct. Of course there is a lot of junk food around - we all know it and the survey proves it. So ELYW, carry on eating a burger and chips every day and see how soon you become a heart disease/stroke statistic! But don't cry when it is too late. Best you go and see a nutrionist or a doctor who can spell out all the horrible things that can happen to you or watch You Are What You Eat on BBC Food. That is scary enough to put anyone off stodge and junk food. - Anne-Marie

Come on!!
Geez people - how can you ban food?? I haven't had a rib burger in two years. I dream of the damn thing these days. On my next visit to SA I'll have one or maybe two. and I'll eat my onion rings and my fries too. I think the Spur is fabulous, even without nutritional content! If you want to ban food, ban Foie Gras. It's elitist, contains a million calories and it's cruel to geese! - AfricanMermaid

PIZZA
Looove my pizza, can u not find out more please - Phil

junk food
What about 'something fishy' - maria

fast foods yes yes
Obviously someone is trying to make fast food bad - no food is bad eat what you want but in moderation. you can eat healthy food and still pick up weight, have a problem with cholesterol, you will still have a hart attack etc but this is not always from food, or smoke or drinks - just because health junkies said it is now its the norm - lizette

Pork ribs
Drop the piggy meat and you'll be ok. Even if pork is acceptable in your religion, scientifically it takes ages to digest in a human system, and the flesh is similar to ours. Eat a pig - be a pig. - Faridah

The good the bad and the fast food...
Article is very interesting, however, does not actually help at all...as the food you have qualified are per fast-food chain store and not per food item Why not categorise it per food item i.e., which burger out of all the food chain stores are the "most healthiest" i.e., McDonalds, Wimpy, Spur etc. - Nats

Fast food- Good and Bad
Fast food isn't that bad, I prefer eating Nandos, because the food id flamed grilled, cut out the chips or substitute em for Wedges or Corn on the Cob. Well as for the others I don't really like. - Chris

Fast death
Wanna die young, eat fast food !! Pity you guys who indulge in this crap will never see the end result of your endeavours. - Sarel

junk food
Funny - people always people are going to die from eating the wrong way - show me the people dying and then I will agree. - Mary
