The wonders of wine

It's good on its own and a wonderful, fat-free addition to just about any dish. Wine goes a long way with its versatility in the culinary world...

  • Obviously, semi-sweet or sweet wine has a higher kilojoule count, so opt for a dry wine.

  • I glass of red wine (I75ml) contains 522kJ, 0g fat, 2,5g carbs, 0,4g protein and I6,5g alcohol.

  • I glass of white wine (I20ml) contains 358kJ, 0g fat, I,7g carbs, 0,2g protein and II,3g alcohol.

  • It’s not only the wine that packs on too many kilojoules, but also what you eat when all resolve crumbles, that does the damage.

  • Where possible, drink wine with soda water or water – better for your head and your hips! At the very least, alternate.

  • Place a splash or two of wine in your frying pan, bring to the boil and use in place of fat for stir-frying and sautéeing.

  • Wrap fish, chicken or vegetables in a foil parcel. Leave an opening to pour in wine, stock and herbs, close and bake until cooked. The result is moist, flavourful and low in fat.

  • Use wine to marinate meat or chicken.

  • If you love bubbles but hate the after-effects, Villiera has introduced an additive-free Méthode Cap Classique Brut natural Chardonnay; and Twee Jongegesselen’s Kröne Borealis is yeast and sulphur-free.

  • Try the Woolworths range of organic, sulphur-free wine. They stock Bon Cap Private Organic Winery’s awardwinning Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage, their new Shiraz; as well as a delicious Sauvignon Blanc from Sonop estate. Remember, to be organic a wine must be made with organic
