Question:
Onion Sprouts
I often see these sprouts being used in magazines. Despite being a dedicated sprouter of many seeds I haven't been able to successfully sprout onion seeds. Germinatination is erratic and takes ages by which time the seeds are bad. I obtain mine from local spice shops as they're used in Indian cooking but perhaps the seeds need to be very fresh? Is there a special method for sprouting onion seeds? A good supplier of the seeds?

Janet Steer says:
I have not sprouted onion seeds before. I believe that they take longer to sprout than most other seeds. The seed is short lived under normal storage conditions and you should therefore consider freezing them. Onion seeds are Alliums. The sprout is therefore a shoot and is that part of the plant that grows above the soil. Usually a sprout is a root. Take a look at www.kitchengarden.co.za. Their seeds are of excellent quality. They sell onion seeds and ship throughout South Africa; have an 'ask the expert' section and loads of interesting sprouting information.
