As one of the oldest farms within the Land van Waveren and Het Roode Zand, current day Tulbagh-Wolseley area, the core of De Heuvel started out as De Hoop in 1714. Records show free-burgher Jan Cloete, son of Gerrit Jacobson Cloete (Dronke Gerrit), ran the farm as a mill.
