Note: Microwave oven power is measured in watts. a 650 -700 watt oven is a full power machine; a 500 - 650 watt machine is medium power and a 400 - 500 watt oven is low power. It takes about one and a half times as long to cook in a low power oven as it takes to cook in a full power oven.

Ever run out of an ingredient right in the middle of cooking? Then you know how frustrating this will be. But all needn't be lost with the help of our handy food substitutes.
 
IF YOU DON'T HAVE

Self-raising flour
5ml baking powder for every 250ml cake flour
Buttermilk
natural yoghurt or milk + 12ml lemon juice or vinegar

½ quantity each cream of tartar + bicarbonate of soda
Castor sugar
finely ground white sugar

2 egg yolks + 15ml water

5ml ground cinnamon + pinch each of ginger, clove

315ml sugar + 65ml liquid

plain yoghurt or cream + 5ml lemon juice or 2ml wine vinegar
Tomato puree
¼ quantity tomato paste or 1½ quantity fresh tomatoes, skinned, seeded and cooked till soft

brown bread flour + rolled/crushed wheat to taste
Herbs, 1 tbsp fresh
5ml dried herbs
Lemon juice, 1 tsp
2.5 ml vinegar
Mustard, 1 tsp dry
