It appears there is a recurring theme. We also had guests from overseas and had planned a 'special' evening for their last night in South Africa so thought that Wombles would be a great idea. However after booking two weeks in advance and showing up on Saturday evening we were told that they didn't have a reservation for us nor could they accommodate our party. The manager was quite dismissive and promised to look into this and call us on Monday morning before 10 am, he didn't. When we phoned him he was not very helpful and said he would have to defer to the owners on this matter. We have eaten there several times before and in my opinion the food is not all that good and relatively pricey. We eventually went to the Local Grill across the road which was excellent. We have been here several times now and it is consistently great. The owners are so confident of their quality they even gave us a tour around their kitchen and meat storage facility. Take my advice don't go to Wombles instead try the Local Grill.

Reading the below reviews I was really shocked to see negative ones. Not that I think they're not valid, just that I have never experienced anything but a perfect evening at Wombles. The service from the guards to the owners is friendly, warm and at the same time unobtrusive. The food is done to perfection and the ambiance is amazing. Yes it's not the cheapest but for what you get, I think it is well worth a trip. In my mind it is the best restaurant in JHB (Possibly even SA) beating out the likes of Giles, Auberge Michelle and possibly even Pomegranates in Somerset West.

The duck is amazing! But I agree that the staff situation is strange and unfriendly. The butter really tastes like dishwashing liquid (how does a place like this not rectify this?) the peppercorn sauce tasted like vim. Not what I expected even at Spur!

Went there with huge expectations and was extremely disappointed! We booked two weeks in advance and upon arrival there was no booking. We were treated like dirt and had to wait for an hour before being seated. The food was average (had the springbok shank) and really tasteless despite being so expensive.Wont bother going there again and I dont recommend it to anyone.

After reading about the history of the place and prizes it has been awarded, we went with great expectations to celebrate our 12th anniversary. Huge disappointment! Except for a blue-cheese salad that was really delicious, the rest of our food was shockingly tasteless and unimpressively prepared. The staff lacked any real warmth and charm and we found the place just hugely overpriced in general. We won't go there again.

Patronising attitude by manager (blond woman) who did not bother to introduce herself, when we requested a better placed table. Had booked 2 weeks in advance and told them it was a special occasion but were given a table in the passage which the lady at the door admitted to not being great. Who cares about good food when you are treated badly by the staff. Apparently not an unusual experience there, according to some of our friends!

We tried them for the first time last night, and were really impressed. Great service, great food, definitely makes my list of favourites and will definitely be back (often).

Sinn's Restaurant "There is something so simply indulgent about Risotto. Yes, health nuts would slate it for it's cheesy, creamy ladenness, but personally, that's all the more reason to revere it (and then pop off to the gym the next day). The Rocket Risotto and Silver Fish I had last night at Sinns, was incredible! The texture of the firm, crisp-skinned fish, paired with the dreamy sanctity of the Risotto, punctuated with beetroot chips and served out in the airy sophistication of Wembly Square- Bellissimo! ..."

Always great food, but unfortunately your enjoyment is pretty much determined by which waiter you get...
