Gallagher: Gone?

Cape Town based Irish celebrity chef Conrad Gallagher has left town... in a bit of a mess.

He may not be the most popular chef on earth (certainly Gordon Ramsay has a few choice words to say about him) but there is no denying Conrad Gallagher’s ability in the kitchen.

The youngest chef ever to receive two Michelin stars, his remarkable talent in the culinary industry has never been in doubt. I’ve had his dim sum, I'd give him a star for that myself. So why then does financial controversy follow this Irish chef around like a dark cloud?

His most recent venture, Geisha Wok & Noodle Bar at the Cape Royale in Cape Town has a notice on the door stating that the staff are on leave and the restaurant will re-open in mid-September. It should read “The staff had enough and left“.

The long-suffering chefs and front of house staff at Geisha apparently had enough of Gallagher’s promises that he would return from his trip to Dublin to pay them their two-month overdue wages, clear debts with suppliers and that business would return to normal.

So on a Saturday night, in the middle of service, they downed tools and walked out of the restaurant. Dramatic? No. Just fed up with being treated like their lives and and well-being don’t matter.

Memoirs of Geisha
According to a member of the team at Geisha who wishes to remain anonymous “The staff were left high and dry as Conrad left promising to come back, but there was always an excuse or delay. The staff found out the hard way that salaries were not forthcoming (again!). This is not the first time he has done this to staff, he also never registered the staff with UIF or any other tax.”

“As for getting stock,we battled to get suppliers as no one would take the chance to work with Conrad, I have used my own money to buy stock so that we could at least open the doors.”

Not a very pretty picture.

Gallagher is married to former P.E model Candice Coetzee and together they recently started another venture in South Africa, Sundance Gourmet Coffee Co. The four Cape Town outlets all closed doors earlier this year.

According to various reports Gallagher owes ABSA bank R1.8 million and Mac Brothers Catering Equipment in the region of R300,000 and he was recently provisionally sequestrated by the Western Cape High Court. I think the writing is pretty much on the wall.

Meanwhile the in-debt-and-due-in-court chef is in Dublin, allegedly job-hunting and talking to Irish tycoon Louis Murray about the possibility of working at Murray’s Balzac restaurant in the La Stampa hotel. But perhaps Louis Murray will think twice when he hears the stories doing the rounds.

So has he left for good? Judging from the reviews we’ve been getting for Geisha Wok & Noodle Bar, it sounds like he won’t be missed.

or should I rather say the clovers are not always greener on the other side. I always thought this guy was coining it, I loved his show on BBC food but I guess one of the leaves on his clover fell off.

It seems such a waste that such a talented chef can't seem to "get it right". His cooking really is genius.

I am surprised that the 2 previous commentators think he such a marvelous chef. I have had the displeasure of working with this "cook" and have yet to see him actually prepare food. I am also not surprised that he did a "runner" here in Cape Town. All you have to do is Google him and you will find a minefield of litigation, liquodations and extradition. Why SA foodies always gets sucked into these would be international chefs beats me. What about our great local chefs?

I agree with Ag Shame... Why do SA foodies always hang from the lips of imported chefs that try to coin it in our country? We have wonderful chefs and cooks that never get exposure in the media. At the Good Crook and Whine show we must watch celebs prepare food just to give the show weight whilst our own talent stands aside. Maybe it is time the media looks inward and at the talent within our borders?

Let him be extradited and given a taste of prison food. Our own chefs are really good so we don't need imports.

This type of thing happens all the time with restaurateurs. They see a till full of cash in the good times and spend what is not theirs. They forget about the suppliers, staff, landlord etc that have to be paid . So in the bad times they dissapear leaving the rest of us hunting for money! They are also the most fussy when it comes to prices and payments. I feel sorry for his staff and suppliers.

Well its no suprise he ran with his tail between his legs. I wonder though how Sun International Hotel Group feel. They placed all their faith in Gallagher. In their eyes, he could do no wrong. Maybe they need to check their stocks :)

Now they wake up. he left Ireland before coming to South Africa in controversy! Why do you think he came here? He ran here. Scoundrel from day 1. Look at the Cooking channel programmes with him "Helping Southern Sun". What a joke. But then again the joke is on Southern Sun actually! What a deal. Stay in the best hotels and give critique on the stiffness of the eggs on the buffet table. I want that job. I think I am more qualified anyway.

Why has it taken so long for people to realise that Conrad was not all he said he was. He has spent time in court already, was known as a bad payer locally, abusive to staff and not a wonderful chef. I agree we have so many great home grown chefs in SA. We don't need his type here to rip people off and not pay his taxes!!! Bye Bye

Find the bastard and slam him with a big fine. As an employer, not registering your employees for UIF and Tax is illegible. Word needs to spread FAST globally about this chef, so no one else falls victim to his lack of business integrity, Ramsey, i'm with you on saying not so pleasant words about this guy

speaking from Dublin, he had a very good review on a new restaurant he opened in Dame street with a superb tasting menu of 8 course and that apparently will set you back 200 Euros. so guys while you are beating yourselves up he is re-establishing himself in his own country.
