Kosher foods conform to the rules of Jewish religion and dietary laws. Reasons for food being non-kosher include the presence of ingredients derived from non-kosher animals or from kosher animals that were not properly slaughtered, a mixture of meat and milk, wine or grape juice (or their derivatives) produced by only a Rabbi, the use of produce from Israel that has not been tithed, or even the use of cooking utensils and machinery which had previously been used for non-kosher food. In Arabic, the word halaal (or halal) means 'permitted' or 'lawful'. Halaal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. Muslim followers cannot consume the following: ? pork or pork by products ? animals that were dead prior to slaughtering ? animals not slaughtered properly or not slaughtered in the name of Allah ? blood and blood by products ? alcohol ? carnivorous animals ? birds of prey ? land animals without external ears
